Warmer weather means sunshine, bathing suits, shorts - and lots of shaving! If you dread warm weather because of your exposed skin, laser hair removal is a great option; it can greatly reduce your grooming needs.
Here are 10 questions answered to help you know everything you need to know about laser hair removal.
1. How does it work?
Laser hair removal devices use a light source that specifically targets the pigment in the hair itself. The rapid pulses of light and energy essentially heat and melt the hair, subsequently damaging the follicles. This prevents future hair from growing in the follicle.
2. How many treatments will I need?
The process only works during the hair's growth cycle, so it's often done multiple times. You may have good results after three treatments, or sometimes as many as nine.
Treatment needs may vary because the laser targets the melanin, or dark pigment, in the hair follicles. The darker the skin tone, the harder it is to differentiate between the skin tone and the pigment in the hair follicles. You can still get good results, but more treatments may be needed. If you have light skin and dark hair, you can get good results with just a few treatments.
3. Is it suitable for everyone?
It is suitable for all types of hair, except gray hair.
4. Is there radiation?
no. The word "laser" stands for "light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation," but it's not like X-rays. This treatment uses only light and heat.
5. How should I prepare for surgery?
Use sun protection and stay out of the sun as much as possible before surgery.
UV rays stimulate melanocytes, which produce more melanin (pigment) in the skin. The greater the contrast between skin color and hair color, the more effective the treatment will be.
You should also avoid shaving for three or four days before your treatment. If the hair grows out a bit, it's easier for the technician to see it. Definitely avoid waxing or depilatory agents as they will pull the hair out of the follicle and leave no target for the laser.
6. How long will it take?
It depends on the area being treated. Smaller areas like the chin or underarms may only take about 20 minutes; a leg or the full back may take up to an hour and a half.
7. Is the treatment painful?
At worst the treatment is a bit uncomfortable because of the nerves in the hair follicles.
8. Are there any inapplicable places?
Laser hair removal works almost anywhere, including the legs, arms, back, underarms, and bikini line. The only off-limits are those out of sight, such as inside the nostrils and around the eye sockets.
9. What can I expect after treatment?
This treatment works for most people and is very safe.
The only problem you may experience afterwards is a little swelling, redness, or inflammation around the hair follicle. This can last for several days.
Hyperpigmentation (darkening of the skin) sometimes occurs, but usually disappears quickly. Burns or blisters may occur, but this is very rare.
10. Will hair grow back?
The overall effect of surgery is generally long-lasting.
However, hormones can sometimes complicate things. If you have endocrine issues that increase your testosterone (such as polycystic ovary syndrome, a condition that causes hormone imbalances), you may need to return for more touch-ups. Hair also sometimes grows back after pregnancy or menopause.
